Google Nears Selection of Sites in India for First Retail Stores Outside US

Alphabet Inc's Google is close to finalizing locations in India for its first physical retail stores outside the United States, as reported by three sources familiar with the matter. India is a strategic growth market for Google, which currently operates five physical stores in the U.S. featuring products like Pixel phones, watches, and earbuds.

Emulating Apple's successful retail strategy, Google aims to establish a network of stores to showcase its products. The tech giant is in advanced discussions regarding potential locations in or near New Delhi and Mumbai, with plans for stores around 15,000 square feet. While a timeline for the openings is not yet confirmed, the capital and financial centers are the leading contenders, surpassing considerations for Bengaluru.

The goal is to compete directly with Apple, particularly targeting the luxury segment. Additional stores may follow the initial openings if successful. Google, like Apple, currently sells its products in India through authorized retailers. Apple recently introduced its own stores in Mumbai and New Delhi, leading the way with premium-priced iPhones.

Google's proposed store plan, while imminent, is subject to standard regulatory and compliance procedures before establishment. A potential location being explored near New Delhi is in Gurugram, a city hub housing numerous global corporations and retail outlets. Despite regulatory hurdles in India, Google remains committed to its expansion plans, navigating challenges related to in-app billing and alleged market position abuses.

In recent developments, Google witnessed the departure of its India head of public policy, highlighting ongoing changes in key personnel roles crucial for governmental engagement.
