Denmark's Prime Minister to Visit Greenland from April 2-4 Amid U.S. Interest

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will visit Greenland from April 2-4 for discussions with the new government of the semi-autonomous territory. She emphasized her anticipation of continuing the close and trusting cooperation between Greenland and Denmark.

During a visit to a U.S. military base in northern Greenland, U.S. Vice President JD Vance criticized Denmark, which has governed Greenland since 1721, for allegedly failing to ensure the island's safety. He suggested that the United States could provide better protection for the strategically important territory.

His comments followed the formation of a new broad coalition government in Greenland, led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who referred to Denmark as its closest ally. Frederiksen, who believes it is up to the people of Greenland to determine their own future, countered Vance's criticism, stating that his portrayal of Denmark was not fair.

She expressed her deep respect for how the Greenlandic people and their politicians are managing the pressures facing Greenland and emphasized the need for unity across political parties and within the Realm.
