According to The Washington Post, House border czar Tom Homan stated that the United States aims to begin transferring migrants to a detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "hopefully" within 30 days. The decision to establish the facility was made by U.S. President on Wednesday.
Homan informed the newspaper, "Hopefully within 30 days we’ll start moving people there." He intends to visit the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay soon to supervise the expedited construction of the facility.
While President Trump mentioned the facility could accommodate up to 30,000 migrants, Homan indicated they would likely begin with a small group. Guantanamo Bay's naval base already includes a migrant facility that, distinct from the high-security U.S. prison, has historically housed individuals like Haitians and Cubans intercepted at sea.
