On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that U.S. and Russian officials, along with Ukraine, would convene in Munich the following day. However, Kyiv clarified that it did not anticipate engaging in discussions with Moscow during the meeting in Germany.
Trump informed reporters, "They're having a meeting in Munich tomorrow. Russia's going to be there with our people. Ukraine is also invited... high-level people from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States."
In response to inquiries for more information, the White House opted not to comment. Various global political and military leaders are assembling in Germany for the Munich Security Conference.
The Ukrainian side expressed that talks with Russia in Munich were not foreseen, emphasizing the necessity for the U.S., Europe, and Ukraine to unify their stance before engaging with Moscow, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's communications adviser, Dmytro Lytvyn.
Lytvyn stated, "Talks with Russians in Munich are not expected."
Requests for comments from Russia's embassy in Washington and its mission to the United Nations in New York regarding Trump's statements went unanswered.
Trump later mentioned, "Tomorrow there's a meeting in Munich and then next week, there's a meeting in Saudi Arabia... Ukraine will be a part of it too."
