South Korea Seeks to Acquire 10,000 GPUs for National AI Computing Center

South Korea announced plans on Monday to acquire 10,000 high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) this year to stay competitive in the global AI race. Acting President Choi Sang-mok highlighted the shifting landscape toward a national innovation ecosystem competition, stressing the need for securing GPUs through public-private collaboration for the national AI computing center.

The U.S. implemented regulations last month to control the export of GPUs, impacting countries worldwide. As South Korea falls among the restricted nations, the government is yet to determine the GPU products to purchase, with specifics expected to be finalized by September.

Nvidia dominates the global GPU market, while OpenAI is venturing into developing its AI silicon to reduce dependency on Nvidia chips. Additionally, Chinese startup DeepSeek is disrupting the AI race with models emphasizing computational efficiency over raw power, potentially narrowing the performance gap between Chinese and U.S. AI processors.
