A Russian comedian was arrested trying to leave the country after facing public backlash for allegedly mocking war veterans. Artemy Ostanin joked about encountering a legless beggar in the Moscow metro during a stand-up performance posted online. The head of a group named Zov Naroda complained that the joke was disrespectful to soldiers injured in Russia's war in Ukraine.

Despite denying any reference to the war in an online interview, Ostanin was detained on suspicion of inciting hatred and debasing human dignity, offenses punishable by up to six years in jail. Reports suggest he was apprehended at a border crossing, possibly attempting to enter Belarus. His arrest was welcomed by influential military bloggers in Russia.

This incident highlights the risks faced by artists addressing sensitive topics, as even indirect connections to the conflict can lead to repercussions. Since February 2022, many writers, artists, and directors have fled the country due to such concerns.

State media reported that Boris Akunin, a prominent novelist, was added to a wanted list for violating laws regarding "foreign agents" after criticizing the invasion of Ukraine. Akunin, now residing in Britain, has been labeled an "extremist" in Russia, leading to the removal of his books from sale in the country.
