Putin Vows to Make Returning Difficult for Western Businesses that Defiantly Closed Doors on Russia

President Vladimir Putin stated that Western companies that left Russia amidst the conflict with Ukraine would not be permitted to reacquire their former businesses or exploit gaps left by local enterprises. The terms of any potential buy-back agreements are to be scrutinized closely, according to Putin speaking at a business forum in Moscow.

Putin praised firms that maintained ties with Russia and criticized those who abruptly exited. He emphasized that companies that sold assets at low prices under pressure would not be allowed to repurchase them at the same reduced cost. Putin stressed that if Russian firms had filled the niche left by Western companies, there would be no opportunity for reentry.

Regarding Western sanctions on Russia, Putin cautioned Russian businesses that the restrictions were likely enduring and that even if lifted, new hurdles to trade would emerge. Putin urged caution, warning against relying on Western safeguards for investors, as competitors would continue to pursue tactics to hinder Russian interests.
