Russia's Foreign Ministry has condemned Moldovan police for violating diplomatic protocol by blocking access to its embassy in the capital.
Relations between Russia and Moldova's pro-European government have sharply deteriorated, with Moldovan President Maia Sandu consistently criticizing Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and alleging that the Kremlin aims to destabilize her administration.
According to a statement on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, security forces in Chisinau stopped individuals from entering or leaving the embassy, citing a bomb threat. The statement detailed that the ambassador of the Russian Federation was denied entry, and embassy staff, including family members, were not permitted to leave.
A protest was filed with Moldova's ambassador in Moscow, and access to the embassy was eventually restored. The statement noted that the embassy had not received any notification from authorities regarding the alleged bomb threat.
Moscow expects the Moldovan authorities to adhere strictly to the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations in the future.
Chisinau police confirmed they had received a bomb threat regarding the embassy but offered no further comment.
