In the early hours of Feb 12, a barrage of Russian missiles struck the Ukrainian capital, resulting in the death of one civilian and injuries to four others, and triggering numerous fires in the city of three million, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The city was rocked by powerful explosions around 0230 GMT, with local officials confirming that air defenses were engaged in fending off the assault.

Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated, "This Russian terror against Ukraine will not cease on its own," calling for unity among allies to bring the war to a just conclusion and accusing President Putin of ongoing violence against Ukrainians and cities.

US President Donald Trump's recent communication with Kyiv has raised hopes for renewed peace negotiations initiated by Russia almost three years ago. President Zelenskiy also announced forthcoming discussions with US officials.

The Ukrainian air force announced the interception of six out of seven ballistic missiles involved in the assault, along with 71 out of 123 drones, using electronic countermeasures against an additional 40.

Reports via the Telegram app indicated at least one fatality and four injuries - including a 9-year-old child - in Kyiv. Images released by state emergency services depicted responders extinguishing flames engulfing a non-residential building in an area near Kyiv where no casualties were reported.

Furthermore, the overnight strike caused damage to critical infrastructure and left two individuals wounded in the northern region of Chernihiv, as confirmed by local authorities.
