Russia and Iran have announced closer military cooperation during President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Moscow. The two nations have signed a 20-year "strategic partnership" treaty encompassing defense, technology, energy, and trade.

Within the treaty, Russia and Iran commit to collaborating on military and security challenges, conducting joint exercises, and preventing their territories from posing threats to each other. President Pezeshkian noted that the accord signifies a new phase in bilateral relations, potentially fostering increased trade, especially in the energy sector.

President Vladimir Putin mentioned the possibility of constructing nuclear power units in Iran and selling surplus gas to Tehran. In light of decreasing gas imports from Russia by the EU due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is exploring new markets, including Iran. Plans for a gas pipeline from Russia to Iran, possibly passing through Azerbaijan, are under negotiation, with the potential for Russia to supply up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually to Iran.
