Universal Music Group has responded to Drake's lawsuit regarding the release of Kendrick Lamar's diss track, "Not Like Us." The Canadian musician filed a lawsuit claiming defamation, alleging that the track spread false allegations implying he is a pedophile.
In defense, Universal, Drake's label for over a decade, stated, "Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist, let alone Drake, is illogical." The label accused Drake of attempting to stifle Lamar's artistic expression by resorting to a legal battle.
Universal emphasized Drake's past use of the label for distributing his music and engaging in rap battles and accused him of now manipulating the legal system to suppress creative expression.
Regarding the allegations that Universal intentionally damaged Drake's career, the label underscored its substantial investment in his success both commercially and financially, stating, "We have not and do not engage in defamation against any individual."
Drake's lawsuit, filed at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, adds a new chapter to his ongoing conflict with Lamar. The legal documents focus on Universal's actions rather than targeting Lamar himself, addressing the label's role in promoting and profiting from false and harmful content.
The lawsuit highlights Drake's claim that Universal prioritized profit over artist safety, suggesting a connection between the controversy around the track and a shooting incident at his Toronto residence in May.
