On February 12, OpenAI announced that they will not release "o3" as a standalone artificial intelligence model to streamline their products, stated CEO Sam Altman.

The Microsoft-backed company plans to launch a GPT-5 model that will encompass o3 and other technologies. Altman shared this update on X after OpenAI introduced o3 and related models in December 2024.

This decision aligns with a trend of U.S. companies facing increased investor scrutiny for their hefty investments in technology, spurred by a recent unveiling of a cost-effective AI model by a Chinese startup.

Altman emphasized the company's goal to simplify their product offerings, aiming for AI to seamlessly function for users amidst the complexity of their models and products.

OpenAI's strategy involves merging the o-series and GPT-series models to create versatile AI systems capable of handling a range of tasks with all available tools.

In addition, OpenAI will introduce a GPT-4.5 model, internally dubbed as "Orion," as their final non-chain-of-thought model. This model, unlike its predecessors, struggles with intricate reasoning tasks, especially in areas like physics and mathematics.

As of now, OpenAI has not provided a timeline for the release of these new products, and they did not respond immediately to Reuters' request for comment.
