Nintendo has unveiled its anticipated successor to the popular Switch console following weeks of speculation and leaks.

Rumors and images of the Switch 2, resembling its predecessor but with a larger screen and detachable controllers, have been circulating online since the beginning of the year.

While details like pricing and release dates are still pending, more information is set to be revealed during a showcase on April 2nd.

The new console will be backward-compatible, allowing existing Switch games to be played on it. Notably, not all titles will be cross-compatible, as stated in a disclaimer by the company.

Remaining a hybrid console, the Switch 2 can be used both docked to a TV and as a portable device.

Nintendo teased a possible new Mario Kart game and hinted at features like magnetic controller attachments and improved joysticks in a video presentation. Further specifics are expected during the April 2 Direct showcase.

The original Switch has been a resounding success for Nintendo, reaching 143 million units sold by September 2024.

Following the Wii U's relative failure, the Switch's versatile design and exclusive games revitalized Nintendo's standing in the console market.

Despite the competition's advancements since 2017, Nintendo aims to entice players with the Switch 2, challenging its predecessor's appeal.

As demand for portable gaming rises, other companies like Valve, Sony, and Microsoft are exploring similar ventures.

Questions remain if the Switch 2 can surpass its predecessor's sales, especially amidst a global chip shortage that strained recent console launches.

Nintendo's president has assured investors of adequate initial stock, but securing a Switch 2 upon release may still pose a challenge.
