American writer and filmmaker David Lynch, known for his notable works such as Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, passed away at the age of 78.

His family confirmed Lynch's death on his official Facebook page, expressing, "There's a big hole in the world now that he's no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.' It's a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way."

Throughout his career, Lynch earned three best director Oscar nominations for Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive. His final major project was Twin Peaks: The Return, a 2017 continuation of the TV series that originally aired in the early 1990s.

Lynch's films were renowned for their surrealist and dreamlike qualities. His debut major release, Eraserhead, in 1977, was marked by dark and unsettling imagery. He received the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990 for Wild at Heart.

In 2020, Lynch was honored with an Academy Award for his outstanding contributions to the film industry. Despite challenges, he remained dedicated, stating he was in "excellent shape" and had no plans to retire.

Originally from Missoula, Montana, Lynch began his career as a painter before transitioning to creating short films in the 1960s.
