The CEO of Netflix announced a $1 billion investment to produce around 20 films and TV series yearly in Mexico over the next four years. During a press conference in Mexico City alongside President Claudia Sheinbaum, Ted Sarandos expressed eagerness to form more partnerships with local producers. Sheinbaum highlighted the positive impact of the film industry on the economy, generating jobs and driving tourism.
Netflix has backed Mexican productions like "Club de Cuervos," "Roma," and "Pedro Paramo," which contributed significantly to the local artistic scene. Sarandos mentioned plans to support aspiring filmmakers, leveraging Mexico's diverse landscapes for filming. Additionally, Netflix has partnered with Estudios Churubusco in Mexico City to further its production capabilities.
Despite controversy surrounding the French production "Emilia Perez," Netflix acquired the rights and released it in Mexican cinemas with mixed receptions. The film faced criticism for cultural stereotypes, language issues, and the handling of sensitive topics, prompting a public discourse on cultural representation in media.
