Mulino refutes reports of US military assessing Panama Canal options

Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino dismissed reports suggesting the U.S. military is exploring options to ensure full U.S. access to the Panama Canal, stating that such claims lack credibility when sourced from unnamed individuals.

At a press conference, he emphasized, “If no one puts their name to such an assertion, I don't ascribe any value to it.”

These discussions reportedly stem from the Pentagon being directed to assess various options, in light of President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions about wanting control over the strategically vital shipping route. Trump has also claimed that the canal's tolls are excessively high and that it is under the influence of China, statements which Mulino has refuted, asserting that the canal is managed fairly and transparently.

The Panama Canal Authority, a government agency, is responsible for overseeing the canal, while CK Hutchison holds concessions to operate two ports at either end. Earlier this month, CK Hutchison announced an agreement to sell the majority of its $22.8 billion global ports business, including its assets in Panama, to a consortium led by U.S. investment firm BlackRock. This move follows accusations from Hong Kong’s city leader aimed at foreign governments.

Mulino noted that the deal is progressing slowly and revealed plans to meet with the head of the Panama Canal Authority to discuss significant port projects in the region. He also mentioned an upcoming trip to Houston, Texas, at the end of May, where he will engage with key players in the shipping industry.

Regarding logistics, he stated that the procedures for a potential forced shift of U.S. shipping southward are “under control,” and he is scheduled to meet Colombian President Gustavo Petro next Friday to discuss border-related matters.
