Mexico City, March 18 (Reuters) - Mexico's government has dispatched a diplomatic note to the United States, aiming to prevent the transfer of Mexicans to the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, announced President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday.
The note was issued in response to the Trump administration's recent declaration of intentions to utilize the U.S. naval base on the Caribbean island.
In addition, Mexico has insisted that its nationals facing deportation from the United States be repatriated to Mexico rather than other countries, as emphasized by Sheinbaum during her daily press briefing.
"No Mexican should be relocated anywhere other than Mexico," Sheinbaum firmly stated.
Sheinbaum's statements follow the Trump administration's controversial action of deporting over 200 alleged members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang this past weekend, in defiance of a judicial order.
Moreover, Mexico, which has opposed deportations to El Salvador, is also striving to prevent migrant transfers to Guantanamo Bay due to challenging conditions and reported suicide attempts among those detained there.
