At least half of U.S. states now prohibit devices that convert pistols into machine guns, reflecting a growing trend over the past decade as law enforcement encounters more of these devices. In Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey signed a law categorizing the possession of conversion devices as a felony, carrying a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. Similarly, New Mexico's Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham enacted a law in February that also makes the possession of these devices a felony, punishable by up to three years in prison. The National Rifle Association noted that U.S. Attorneys can already prosecute for the misuse of conversion devices without the need for additional state laws.
