The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating a cyberattack at Oracle that resulted in the theft of patient data, according to Bloomberg News. Earlier this month, Oracle informed several healthcare customers that hackers had accessed its servers and copied patient data to an external location after January 22. The attack appears to have been aimed at extorting multiple medical providers across the United States.
The FBI has not commented on the situation, and Oracle has not responded to requests for comments. It remains unclear how many patient records were compromised and which healthcare providers were affected.
Oracle, based in Austin, Texas, recently acquired the U.S. healthcare IT company Cerner Corp, enhancing its presence in the electronic health record sector and likely increasing the number of healthcare clients on its cloud platform. This acquisition included a $16 billion contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which has faced notable outages and scrutiny from lawmakers.
According to reports, the hackers accessed older Cerner servers, taking data that had not yet been migrated to Oracle's cloud storage service. Oracle became aware of the breach around February 20.
