Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to announce a cabinet reshuffle in the coming days, according to five government officials. The move aims to strengthen support following a deadly train crash in 2023. It is anticipated that Mitsotakis will replace Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. Transport Minister Christos Staikouras will also resign, with a deputy minister likely to oversee the reform of Greece's railways.
The reshuffle is expected to take place by Saturday, following widespread protests seeking justice for the 57 individuals, mostly students, who lost their lives in Greece's deadliest rail incident. These demonstrations marked the country's largest protest in years, causing a dip in support for Mitsotakis' center-right government, which recently survived a vote of no confidence.
Although the government had pledged railway reforms after the 2023 election, progress has been sluggish. The safety deficiencies contributing to the crash remain unaddressed two years later, with no convictions related to the tragedy. An ongoing investigation is projected to conclude later this year.
