More than half a million people are experiencing travel disruptions at German airports on Monday due to a 24-hour strike over workers' pay, leading to thousands of flight cancellations.
At Frankfurt airport, Germany's busiest, no passenger flights will depart on Monday, with potential delays and cancellations extending to Tuesday.
Out of 1,116 incoming and outgoing flights scheduled at Frankfurt on Monday, 1,050 have already been canceled, with the count expected to increase, according to a Fraport spokesperson.
The strike, initiated by the Verdi union on Friday, is affecting 13 airports nationwide, including Munich, Berlin, and Dusseldorf.
Hamburg airport employees moved their strike forward by a day, resulting in almost 300 flight cancellations there.
Verdi is demanding an 8% wage hike or a minimum of 350 euros ($380) more per month, along with increased bonuses and extra time off. However, employers have deemed these requests unfeasible.
Negotiations are set to resume later this month.
