In Radlin, southern Poland, an underground tremor struck a coal mine owned by the Polish mining group PGG early on Monday, resulting in one fatality and the hospitalization of 11 miners, according to PGG.
The tremor, which occurred at 0206 GMT approximately 800 meters (874 yards) below ground, was confirmed in a statement.
During a press conference, PGG Acting CEO Bartosz Kepa stated, "There were 29 of our employees in the endangered area. Eleven were hospitalized. Unfortunately, one of our colleagues, a miner, passed away."
The miner was declared dead on-site, with Lukasz Pach, head of emergency medical services in Katowice, reporting that four of the hospitalized miners were in serious condition.
PGG's Deputy CEO for Production, Marek Skuza, mentioned that efforts to secure the affected area were ongoing, and the extent of material damage at the mine had not yet been determined.
