The European Commission has invited social media giants like Facebook, TikTok, and X to participate in a test assessing their efforts to combat disinformation ahead of the upcoming German election in February, as reported on Friday by an EU spokesperson.

The "stress test" on January 31 aims to ensure that platforms comply with the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA) by having adequate measures in place to address risks. According to EU spokesperson Thomas Regnier, the test will simulate scenarios where the DSA is relevant to evaluate how platforms would respond.

A TikTok representative confirmed receiving the invitation for the Jan. 31 meeting while no immediate responses were provided by Meta, Snap, Google's Alphabet, X, Microsoft, and LinkedIn regarding their participation.

The invited participants include senior compliance officers and specialists responsible for DSA implementation, as per a senior European Commission official.

Regnier highlighted that this test, the first for a national election, follows a successful one conducted before the European Parliament elections last year. The collaboration with German authorities signals the commitment to ensuring election security.

Notably, the test will be conducted confidentially, behind closed doors.
