COPENHAGEN, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Wednesday that she had a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, informing him that Greenland holds the authority to determine its own path to independence.

Trump, who will assume office on Jan. 20, had asserted last week the imperative nature of the U.S. controlling Greenland and suggested employing military or economic tactics, like imposing tariffs on Denmark, to achieve this goal.

"In the discussion, the prime minister referenced the remarks made by the Chairman of the Greenlandic Parliament, Mute B. Egede, affirming that Greenland is not for sale," mentioned Frederiksen's office in a statement.

"The prime minister underscored that the decision on independence lies solely with Greenland," the statement continued.

Additionally, Frederiksen underscored the necessity of fortifying security in the Arctic and conveyed that Denmark is prepared to assume a greater role, as stated in the statement.
