China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi informed the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday of China's support for peace talks in Ukraine and emphasized that Gaza and the West Bank should not be used as a bargaining tool. Following a meeting between Russian and U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia, Wang reiterated China's support for peace efforts. He underscored Beijing's commitment to President Xi Jinping's four-point strategy, which includes respecting countries' sovereignty, adhering to the U.N. Charter, addressing security concerns, and promoting crisis resolution.
During China's presidency of the Security Council for February, Wang presided over a session focusing on multilateralism. Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia highlighted the importance of understanding the root causes of conflicts before mediating peace initiatives. Nebenzia criticized what he perceived as a disregard for Russia's security interests in the Ukraine conflict and Ukraine's failure to protect its entire populace.
Regarding the Middle East, Wang stressed the significance of upholding the two-state solution and asserted that Gaza and the West Bank should not be used in political bargaining. He emphasized that Palestinians should lead Palestine post-conflict. Wang urged the international community to not overlook issues like the Gaza crisis.
In a press conference following the Security Council meeting, Wang emphasized the need to address multiple global issues comprehensively, including Gaza, without neglecting them in favor of the Ukraine conflict.
