Canada has designated seven transnational criminal organizations as terrorist entities, as announced by the Public Safety Minister on Thursday. This decision follows the United States' recent classification of Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel, and other drug cartels as global terrorist organizations.

Minister David McGuinty, speaking in Ottawa, highlighted that these criminal groups instill fear through extreme violence, engaging in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and illegal arms trade. He emphasized, "The measures we are taking will keep fentanyl off the streets and prevent its entry into the United States."

Building on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's earlier statement on February 3, Canada's commitment to designate cartels as terrorist groups was made concurrently with a 30-day suspension of U.S. tariffs. Additionally, Canada has appointed a fentanyl czar. Statistics reveal that only 0.2% of fentanyl seized in the U.S. originates from the Canadian border, with the vast majority coming through the United States' southern border with Mexico.
