Belgian authorities were on the hunt for two suspects on Wednesday following a shooting near Brussels South international railway station, as reported by the city's prosecutor's office.

The shooting occurred around 6:00 am (0500 GMT) at the Clemenceau metro station in central Brussels, with no injuries reported. The incident is not believed to have had a terrorist motive.

Police initiated a search in the metro system tunnels, which saw partial closures after two individuals with machine guns were sighted fleeing into the Clemenceau station.

Reports suggest the shooting was likely drug-related, with the perpetrators reportedly missing their intended target. The station, along with others in the vicinity, remained closed for hours in the aftermath of the event.

Video footage released by VRT depicted two individuals entering the Clemenceau metro station and opening fire with automatic weapons. Meanwhile, a significant police presence was seen at the scene as efforts to locate the suspects began.

The incident disrupted metro services, vital for Brussels, a city housing numerous EU institutions and NATO's headquarters. By 2 pm (1300 GMT), the entire metro system had resumed operations, including stations around Gare du Midi international train station, a key point for Eurostar connections from Paris and London.
