Anti-Government Protest Disrupts Air Traffic in Belgium

Thousands of Belgians protested in Brussels on Thursday against the new government's proposed pension reforms, initiating a multi-day strike that paralyzed air traffic nationwide.

Brussels airport reported the cancellation of 430 flights on Thursday, with disruptions expected to last only one day, according to a spokesperson.

Demonstrators carried signs with slogans like "We're not lemons," and some showcased plaques with Latin phrases, referencing Prime Minister Bart De Wever's penchant for incorporating Latin quotes into his speeches.

The strike was anticipated to impact public transportation, postal services, and also drew support from firefighters and military personnel.

Under the proposed pension reform, individuals who work beyond retirement age with 35 years of service would receive benefits, while early retirees with less than 35 years would face penalties. The new system is seen as less advantageous for lower-income individuals compared to the previous system, which offered a lump sum based on years of service.

Flemish nationalist Bart De Wever's government took office on Feb. 3, following eight months of negotiations resulting in a five-party coalition that includes right-wing, centrist, and socialist parties, including Vooruit.

The socialist union had cautioned of initiating a strike if Vooruit aligned itself with the mostly center-right government.
