"Anora," a Drama About a Sex Worker, Dominates the Oscars with Five Awards, Including Best Picture

LOS ANGELES, March 2 (Reuters) - "Anora," a film depicting the journey of a New York sex worker who seizes an opportunity for a fresh start by impulsively marrying a wealthy Russian client, clinched five Academy Awards on Sunday, including the prestigious best picture Oscar.

Sean Baker not only secured best picture but also took home awards for best director, original screenplay, and editing, tying the record for the most Oscars won by an individual in a single year, alongside Walt Disney in 1954.

The movie's lead, 25-year-old Mikey Madison, was honored as the best actress for her performance in "Anora."

Despite its modest $6 million budget, "Anora" triumphed in a competitive Oscars race that featured other notable contenders such as the thriller "Conclave," immigrant tale "The Brutalist," and musical hit "Wicked."

Encouraging independent filmmakers, Baker, known for his work focusing on marginalized individuals, stated, "If you're trying to make independent films, please keep doing it. We need more. This is proof."

Madison's win over Demi Moore for best actress in "The Substance" was unexpected. Expressing her gratitude, Madison, a Los Angeles native, remarked, "To be here standing in this room today is really incredible," while also acknowledging and supporting the sex worker community.

Released by, "Anora" grossed $40 million worldwide, contrasting with the immense success of "Wicked," which amassed $728 million.

Adrien Brody secured his second best actor Oscar for his portrayal of a Jewish immigrant chasing the American dream in "The Brutalist." Brody, who previously won for "The Pianist," emphasized the fragile nature of the acting profession, acknowledging the transient nature of success.
