In a speech at the Munich Security Conference, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy asserted on Saturday that Ukraine would never agree to any peace agreements made without its involvement. This was seen as a direct message to U.S. President Donald Trump in his efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia.
Zelenskiy also called on European nations to establish their own military forces, emphasizing the need for European leaders to shape their own future. He stressed that Ukraine's armed forces alone were insufficient for ensuring security in the region.
During his address, Zelenskiy insisted, "Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs." He underlined the importance of European nations adhering to the same principle.
Following a recent phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelenskiy expressed concerns about a potential meeting between the two leaders, suggesting that Ukraine wants to collaborate with the United States and Europe to devise a unified strategy before any such meeting takes place.
Zelenskiy warned that a premature meeting between Trump and Putin could jeopardize peace efforts, especially if Russia utilizes battle-hardened soldiers in future conflicts. He urged European leaders to consider their military readiness in the event of potential threats from Russia, including both overt and covert tactics.
As he outlined the challenges ahead, Zelenskiy stressed the crucial need to fortify the Armed Forces of Europe to promote lasting peace and security in the region.
