Waymo has been granted a temporary permit to map San Francisco International Airport, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced. The mapping process, which began on March 14, will involve Waymo employees manually driving the vehicles, as they are not permitted to operate autonomously at the airport. According to airport spokesperson Doug Yakel, the aim is to provide services to the millions of travelers coming to and leaving the city. At any given time, a maximum of two mapping vehicles are allowed at SFO. Waymo's objective is to obtain a future permit for passenger operations, as the current regulations do not allow for robotaxi services.
