An extensive search and rescue operation is currently ongoing following a mid-air collision between an American Airlines flight and a helicopter in Washington DC, leading to both aircraft crashing into the Potomac River.

John Donnelly, chief of emergency services, described the conditions as "extremely rough" due to darkness and icy temperatures.

The American Airlines flight, originating from Wichita, Kansas, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the military helicopter had three US Army soldiers on board.
