US Prepared to Engage with China and Canada Regarding WTO Disputes

According to World Trade Organization documents on Tuesday, the U.S. mission informed China and Canada of its readiness to hold discussions in Geneva regarding the trade disputes initiated by the two countries in response to new tariffs. Canada initiated a WTO trade dispute earlier this month as a response to "unjustified tariffs" imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Similarly, China launched a dispute following Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods in February, leading to reciprocal tariffs by both countries, as outlined in the WTO documents shared on Tuesday.

The U.S. stated that "It is specious for China to invoke dispute settlement for an alleged breach of WTO rules," while the U.S. raised similar concerns in its statement on Canada. In the WTO dispute settlement system, engaging in dialogue is a standard procedure, although cases often take years to reach a resolution.

Despite the ongoing tension among WTO members, some trade delegates interpreted Washington's move as a positive signal.
