North Korean-backed hackers stole over $659 million in a series of cryptocurrency thefts in 2024, as revealed in a rare joint statement by Japan, South Korea, and the United States. The statement also confirmed North Korea's involvement in the $235 million hack of WazirX, India's largest cryptocurrency exchange that took place in July. According to Chainalysis, North Korean hackers were accountable for 61% of the total cryptocurrency stolen in 2024, amounting to $1.34 billion. Additionally, the U.S. State Department is offering rewards of up to $5 million for information that could help disrupt North Korean front companies Yanbian Silverstar and Volasys Silverstar.
