US and British Commanders Demonstrate Unity Amid Trump Administration Uncertainty

FAIRFORD, England, March 11 (Reuters) - U.S. and British military leaders emphasized the importance of joint military exercises in Europe to deter Russia. This display of unity followed concerns over U.S. commitment to NATO after President Donald Trump's gestures towards Moscow.

Air Marshal Johnny Stringer, NATO's deputy air commander, and U.S. Eighth Air Force Commander Major General Jason Armagost commended the Bomber Task Force for conducting nine missions in Europe since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

When questioned about potential uncertainties in U.S.-NATO cooperation under Trump, both leaders stressed the significance of the U.S.-Europe partnership for enhancing security, leaving "politics to politicians."

Stringer underscored the significance of the 75-year-old alliance, stating, "What you are seeing here is testament to the world's most successful alliance." At an airfield in southwestern England where most missions originated, he highlighted NATO's commitment to essential deterrence missions across Europe.

Despite Trump's previous skepticism towards NATO, the commanders assured that joint military exercises would continue, underscoring the importance of collaboration and readiness. Armagost emphasized the strength of joint planning and operations, independent of geopolitical factors, as a key aspect of their effective partnership.

Stringer further emphasized the ongoing importance of the missions as a crucial message to Russian President Vladimir Putin and as vital training exercises. He mentioned a standing plan to ensure readiness for any potential military action.
