UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel expressed his intention to engage in discussions regarding the potential acquisition of Commerzbank with the newly-formed German government. He anticipates obtaining clarity on the matter by the end of the year, as reported by the German newspaper FAZ.

With the upcoming German government elections set for Feb. 23, it is speculated that conservative candidate Friedrich Merz may take over from Chancellor Olaf Scholz, a Social Democrat who disapproves of the acquisition.

Orcel emphasized the significance of German government support for the deal, mentioning in an interview, "Without the support of such an important institution as the German government it will be difficult." He expressed his hope to have a clearer picture by summer, aiming to determine the situation definitively by the end of the year.
