In an interview with Le Monde newspaper released on Thursday, Kyiv's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine and Europe should have a role in future Ukraine peace talks, stating, "Nothing can be discussed on Ukraine without Ukraine or on Europe without Europe."
Sybiha advocated for Ukrainian NATO membership as the most cost-effective way for the alliance to ensure the country's security while safeguarding its territorial integrity and sovereignty. He expressed hope for strong European support under the Trump administration to advance the peace process, highlighting ongoing planning efforts by American allies.
Following a call between Presidents Putin and Trump, discussions were initiated with Trump suggesting that NATO membership for Ukraine was not feasible, contrary to Ukraine's aspirations. Sybiha underscored that Ukraine's path towards NATO is irreversible, enshrined in their constitution and aligned with their strategic interests.
European capitals responded with concern to Trump's stance, emphasizing their crucial role in the peace talks due to the potential security implications for Europe in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine three years ago.
