KYIV, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Ukraine and other European nations are considering the prospect of purchasing and storing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to enhance Europe's energy security once gas transit from Russia concludes, according to Ukraine's Foreign Minister.

Ukraine, formerly a key route for Russian gas before a recent transit deal expiration, boasts substantial underground gas storage facilities, particularly in its western region.

"We see significant potential following the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine in the ability to acquire LNG from the United States," noted Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during a joint press conference with British Foreign Minister David Lammy.

During a follow-up question, a ministry spokesperson clarified that Ukraine could not only procure U.S. LNG but also facilitate storage for both U.S. and other European nations’ LNG.

Highlighting Ukraine's robust underground gas storage capabilities, Sybiha emphasized the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in bolstering Europe's energy security.

Sybiha also extended an invitation to U.S. companies to engage in reconstruction efforts and aid Ukraine in recovering from the damage inflicted by nearly three years of conflict.

Regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s interest in Ukraine's mineral deposits, Kyiv’s proposed Victory Plan aims to establish an agreement with the U.S., EU, and other allies to allow collaborative investment and utilization of Ukraine's valuable natural resources.

Sybiha emphasized the importance of attracting significant business interests to Ukraine to develop and safeguard these resources in partnership with the United States and other allies.
