Britain's Keir Starmer is scheduled to announce a plan to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP, as reported by The Sun newspaper on Tuesday. This announcement comes a day before the Prime Minister's meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Starmer is set to address defense and security matters in parliament at 1230 GMT on Tuesday. Currently, Britain allocates 2.3% of its GDP to defense, with plans to raise it to 2.5%, although the timeframe for this increase has not been disclosed.
Earlier this month, European leaders were surprised by the Trump administration's indication that Europe should enhance its security capabilities. This prompted a flurry of diplomatic discussions.
Starmer, along with others, convened in Paris to strategize a joint response. The talks followed Trump's negotiations with Russia concerning the end of the three-year war in Ukraine, excluding Ukrainian and European leaders.
Macron visited Washington on Monday and is scheduled to meet the U.S. President on Thursday. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk anticipates joining other European leaders in London on Sunday to deliberate on next steps.
