UK Initiates Inquiry into TikTok and Reddit for Handling Children's Personal Data

On March 3, Reuters reported that the Information Commissioner's Office in Britain initiated an investigation into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur to assess their procedures for protecting children's privacy.

These social media platforms utilize intricate algorithms to curate content and maintain user engagement. However, the issue arises when these algorithms amplify similar content, potentially exposing children to harmful material.

The investigation focuses on how TikTok uses personal information from 13–17-year-olds to tailor their content. Reddit and Imgur are also under scrutiny for their methods of verifying the age of child users.

The Information Commissioner's Office stated that if any of these companies are found to have violated regulations, they will be given an opportunity to respond before a final decision is reached.

In 2023, the ICO fined the company £12.7 million ($16 million) for unlawfully using personal data of children under 13 without parental consent.

Reddit assured its cooperation with the ICO and commitment to adhere to relevant regulations across various regions.

ByteDance, TikTok, and Imgur have not yet responded to Reuters' request for comments.

Legislation in Britain requires social media platforms to prevent children from accessing harmful content by imposing age restrictions and verification mechanisms. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are mandated to filter out or diminish damaging material to safeguard minors under proposed British regulations from the previous year.
