UK Development Minister Resigns Due to PM Starmer’s Aid Budget Cut

British International Development Minister Anneliese Dodds resigned on Friday due to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's decision to reduce foreign aid to increase defense spending. Dodds' resignation followed Starmer's successful meeting with the U.S. President in the White House and signal to boost Europe's security by cutting the overseas development budget.

Concerns were raised about the potential negative impact of the aid cut on British influence abroad and support for those in need. Jenny Chapman, a member of the upper house of parliament, was appointed as the new Minister for International Development to replace Dodds.

In her resignation letter, Dodds expressed concerns that the budget cuts would hinder Britain's development priorities in conflict zones like Yemen, Sudan, and Ukraine. She emphasized the detrimental effects on food and healthcare for vulnerable populations and the reputational damage to the UK.

Dodds highlighted the risk of aligning with President Trump's cuts to USAID, urging Starmer to reconsider and protect national security while maintaining a strong commitment to international development.

In response, Starmer acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and affirmed his commitment to restoring a sustainable development agenda while prioritizing national security.

The United Kingdom is a significant international aid donor, ranking fifth globally. The Minister of International Development's responsibilities encompass overseeing humanitarian programs worldwide, from assisting conflict-displaced populations in Sudan to promoting girls' education in Pakistan.

Dodds, who had collaborated closely with Starmer for years, recognized the need for increased defense spending but lamented that the aid budget bore the full brunt of the adjustment. Her resignation stemmed from broader communication challenges within the Labour Party, where her role as chief economic spokesperson was reassigned in 2021.
