The University of British Columbia has prohibited the Chinese AI tool DeepSeek on university devices due to significant privacy and security risks. Concerns arise from DeepSeek's extensive data collection and sharing practices, inadequate encryption, and the transmission of personal data. University spokesman Matthew Ramsey confirmed that DeepSeek is the only AI tool currently banned, with no restrictions on others like ChatGPT. Additionally, the federal government has limited DeepSeek's use on certain mobile devices and has advised other agencies to follow suit.
