WASHINGTON, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The United States reversed its position on Friday, confirming that Russia had indeed invaded Ukraine. Additionally, it was announced that Kyiv would be soon entering into a minerals agreement with the United States as part of ongoing efforts to bring an end to the conflict.
Earlier, former President Trump had stirred controversy by suggesting that Ukraine had "started" the conflict three years ago. However, in a recent interview with Fox News Radio, he acknowledged Russia's role in the invasion, stating, "Russia attacked, but they shouldn't have let him attack." Trump also expressed that a minerals agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine was on the horizon, mentioning that a deal could be finalized soon.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared his optimism about the ongoing discussions, emphasizing the importance of achieving a fair outcome. He also alluded to a video address where he underscored the need for fair negotiations following tense exchanges between the two leaders.
The shift in the U.S.'s stance, as the key supporter of Ukraine, has raised concerns among European officials that Kyiv might be pressured into a peace agreement that may not serve its interests.
The interactions between Trump, Zelenskiy, and other international leaders have intensified as discussions continue surrounding minerals, security guarantees, and peace negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Furthermore, the United States presented a proposed United Nations resolution commemorating the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a peaceful end to the conflict.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany stressed the importance of including Ukraine in peace talks during a phone call with Zelenskiy. Meanwhile, Polish President Andrzej Duda encouraged Zelenskiy to maintain constructive cooperation with Trump, ahead of their meeting in Washington scheduled for Saturday.
