Trump Allies Urge Zelenskiy to Alter Course or Step Down

Top Republicans aligned with the U.S. President pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday to reconsider his stance on the conflict with Russia or step down. This move came following a tense White House meeting the previous week.

In London, European leaders supported Zelenskiy, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urging enhanced defense efforts. President Trump and Vice President JD Vance's meeting with Zelenskiy led to his early departure without signing a planned deal, which surprised and concerned global leaders.

Zelenskiy accused Russian President Putin of breaching a 2019 ceasefire agreement, labeling him a killer and a terrorist. Trump's national security adviser, Mike Waltz, emphasized the need for Zelenskiy to show readiness for peace negotiations and highlighted Trump's desire for a lasting resolution involving Russian concessions and European-led security guarantees.

There were discussions about Zelenskiy's leadership ability, with Senator Lindsey Graham raising doubts about future collaboration with him. House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed similar sentiments, suggesting either a change in Zelenskiy's approach or new leadership to achieve peace.

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders opposed calls for Zelenskiy's resignation, emphasizing his courageous defense of democracy against Putin's aggression. Senator James Lankford also disagreed with the idea of Zelenskiy stepping down.

Democrats criticized the White House's pro-Russia stance, with Senator Chris Murphy condemning it as aligning more with Moscow than with democratic allies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the U.S.' openness to reengage in peace talks when Ukraine is ready.

While acknowledging the necessity of negotiations with Russia, Rubio stressed the importance of constructive dialogue over hostility. Senator Amy Klobuchar expressed shock over the White House clash and highlighted a potential path for a peace agreement.
