The Trump administration is reportedly set to strengthen semiconductor restrictions on China, in line with the Biden administration's efforts to curb Beijing's technological advancement. According to Bloomberg News, U.S. officials met with Japanese and Dutch counterparts to discuss limiting Tokyo Electron and ASML engineers' activities in China concerning semiconductor equipment.
There are plans to increase restrictions on Nvidia chip exports to China without a license, as some Trump officials seek to regulate the quantity and types of chips sent. Nvidia, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and the Dutch foreign ministry declined to provide comments.
Neither Tokyo Electron, ASML, nor the White House responded to Reuters' requests for comments. The initiative aims to have key allies align with the U.S. in enforcing constraints on China, akin to those imposed on American chip equipment firms including Lam Research, KLA, and Applied Materials, as outlined in the report.
