On Friday, U.S. private equity firm TPG and Russian state-owned firms Rosatom and Transneft successfully prevented jailed tycoon Ziyavudin Magomedov from pursuing his $14 billion lawsuit in London. Magomedov had accused the companies of colluding in a conspiracy to seize his assets after his arrest in 2018 on embezzlement charges, claiming a Russian state-supported effort to strip him of his port operators' holdings.
The accused parties refuted the allegations, branding them as "preposterous." Judge Robert Bright concurred, ruling that there was no substantial basis to proceed with the case against TPG or Transneft, and that any claims involving Rosatom should not be tried in London.
Previously, Magomedov, together with his brother Magomed, controlled a port logistics to oil and gas empire under their Summa Group conglomerate. However, facing embezzlement and organized crime charges, Magomedov received a 19-year prison sentence in 2022. Currently incarcerated in a Kirov penal colony, he continues to assert his innocence and has been unsuccessful in appealing his conviction.
