Thousands Evacuated as New Rapidly Spreading Fire Erupts near Los Angeles

A fast-moving wildfire has started in Los Angeles County, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate an area already devastated by historic fires. The Hughes fire began 45 miles northwest of Los Angeles near Castaic Lake, spreading rapidly to over 10,000 acres fueled by winds and dry brush on Wednesday. While no homes or businesses have been harmed, authorities are optimistic about containment.

Residents were seen protecting their properties and evacuating as flames enveloped the mountains, with aircraft dropping water and retardant. The region is on high alert due to strong winds and dry conditions, heightening the fire risk.

Approximately 31,000 individuals are under mandatory evacuation, with another 23,000 on standby. Despite challenges, progress is being made in controlling the fire, with 14% containment reported by Cal Fire.

The ongoing threat is attributed to climate change making vegetation more prone to burning. Chief Marrone expressed confidence in resources mobilized to combat the fire. Meanwhile, fears of mudslides and flooding following anticipated rainfall are growing in areas recently affected by fires.
