In a recent development, a U.S. district court has ruled in favor of Tencent, awarding the tech giant almost $85 million in damages. The court found that Taiwan-based TV box company Unblock Tech and other distributors violated Tencent's copyrights by copying and distributing over 1,500 shows, including popular titles like "Little Days" and "Three Body Problem."
The lawsuit was filed by Tencent Penguin Film, Tencent Computer System, and Tencent Technology. The judgment was delivered by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas on Feb. 7. Despite requests for comments, Tencent and Unblock Tech remained silent.
Vivian Toh, an analyst at TechTechChina, noted, "In the realm of video content infringement, international violations are particularly challenging to address... Tencent's legal triumph underscores their commitment to combating such infringements."
Tencent has a history of litigating against companies like TikTok and Douyin-owner ByteDance in China for copyright infringement, alleging unauthorized use of its content. The outcomes of these lawsuits remain undisclosed.
