On January 15, Synthesia, an AI video avatar platform, announced it had secured $180 million in a new funding round led by NEA, propelling the UK-based company to a $2.1 billion valuation. This valuation positions Synthesia as the most valuable generative AI media firm in the UK, according to Dealroom data. Synthesia's technology enables businesses to create customized AI avatars for instructional and corporate videos, with a customer base of over 60,000 companies, including Zoom Communications, Heineken, and Inter IKEA Group. The funding from its Series D round, which attracted new investors like Atlassian Ventures and PSP Growth, alongside existing supporters GV and MMC Ventures, brings Synthesia's total capital raised to more than $330 million. As Momei Qu from PSP Growth noted, "There are a lot of exciting developments in AI, but few are able to demonstrate real value and application like Synthesia." The funding will support Synthesia's expansion into North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia, where the company already employs over 400 people across seven countries. Over half of Synthesia's revenue is generated from the U.S., establishing it as a significant player in the AI video avatar industry, competing with other startups such as Colossyan, HeyGen, and Veed.
