Swiss Tourism Recovers with Record Figures after Weather and Pandemic Challenges

In 2024, Switzerland's hotel industry saw a record 42.8 million overnight stays, according to the government, marking a significant boost for the country's tourism sector. The industry, which has faced challenges such as limited snowfall and pandemic-related shutdowns in recent years, experienced a 2.6% increase in stays compared to 2023, with robust demand from international visitors.

Although domestic demand remained relatively stable, the number of stays by foreign visitors surged by 5.1% to 22 million stays, reaching the highest level in over 50 years. Germany led in the number of foreign tourists to Switzerland, followed by the United States, Britain, and France. Notably, there was a substantial rise in overnight stays by Chinese visitors, signaling a continued recovery post-pandemic.

Tourism plays a vital role in Switzerland, supporting around 167,000 full-time jobs, equivalent to 4% of the workforce, and contributing nearly 3% to the country's gross domestic product.
